As the global pandemic continues to plague countries worldwide, resilient Hong Kong has begun to relax strict entry requirements for visitors. While travelling in times of a pandemic can be daunting for many, the Hong Kong SAR has eased measures and removed several of its COVID entry barriers as a means of providing essential economic and business aid to the region.

The details of the lifting of restrictions are outlined as follows:

Visitors No Longer Need Special Permission

As of April 8, 2021, visitors travelling to Hong Kong will no longer have to obtain special government permission or a valid travel permit. Quarantine & Testing Requirements Also Suspended

In addition to removing the special permission requirement, the SAR has also taken action to suspend the requirement for visitors to undergo PCR testing and additional days of quarantine upon arrival.

Eligibility to Enter Hong Kong

At present, anyone who meets the eligibility criteria as outlined by the Immigration Department can travel to Hong Kong for whatever reason, so long as the visitor meets the following conditions:

● The visitor’s primary purpose for travelling is a valid one

● The visitor has a valid visa or other immigration documents

● The visitor has no symptoms associated with Covid-19

● The visitor has not been in close contact with someone known to be infected with the virus

● The visitor has not been in any location within 14 days of the visit which is considered to be high-risk for the virus

Closed Borders to Remain in Place

The Hong Kong SAR borders will continue to remain closed with respect to foreign visitors until further notice. Visitors travelling by air or sea to the SAR are still subject to the restrictions as in force prior to the 8 April 2021 amendments.

Exemptions to Entry Restrictions

Notwithstanding the restrictions in place, the Immigration Department may consider granting exemptions to those in possession of a valid travel document. Generally speaking, the exemptions may include travel for:

● Employment

● Business

● Educational purposes
Visitors should contact the Immigration Department in advance of their planned visit to confirm whether or not an exemption is in place.

What to Do Upon Arrival in Hong Kong

All individuals arriving in Hong Kong for whatever purpose will be screened for potential COVID-19 exposure. Those found to have come in contact with an infected individual may be subject to a 14-day hotel quarantine. Additionally, upon arrival in the SAR, travellers should:

● Wear a face mask at all times

● Carry out a viral test after checking out of the hotel

● Continue to regularly monitor their health and take any additional measures outlined by the government

The Lifting of Barriers & Reopening of Borders

As the virus continues to spread throughout the world, Hong Kong is making an effort to ensure that travellers remain safe, while still being able to take part in economic activities. The removal of Covid-19 related barriers allows for the city’s famous vibrancy and commercial links to be reignited, and provide a much-needed economic boost.

Essential Guidelines for Travellers

To ensure a safe journey to and from the city, all travellers to the SAR should adhere to the following:

● Check your temperature twice daily and seek medical attention should it exceed 37.5°C

● Wear a face mask when travelling, even if you’re exempt from quarantine

● Avoid crowded places

● Immediate hotel quarantine if contacting any infected individuals

● Practice social distancing and adhere to all contact restrictions

● Follow all guidelines and regulations set out by the Immigration Department

As the world slowly begins to open up, the Hong Kong SAR has begun to relax its COVID entry restrictions in an effort to reignite its once-bustling atmosphere. The government’s removal of travel permits, PCR testing and quarantine requirements has enabled the region to open its arms to visitors who meet the simple criteria of having a valid visa or other immigration documents, and not having had contact with any known infected people.

The lifting of barriers provides the SAR with an opportunity to kickstart its economy once more, and allow for a faster return to the vibrancy for which Hong Kong is renowned. Moreover, it’s also hoped that the gradual reopening of borders will foster new friendships and relationships, and enable residents and visitors to embrace the city’s potential as it continues to recover from the pandemic.
